In March 2020, SC Works Career Centers in the Catawba Region (serving Chester, Lancaster, and York Counties in South Carolina) were no longer able to provide face-to-face services. They also were required to close their doors to the public but because the project was considered Essential, the goal was to become virtual as quickly as possible.

We did not have a virtual platform other than the state system for assisting job seekers with Unemployment Benefits for the state. We still lacked outreach to job seekers who were not in the SC Works system and who still needed guidance and assistance with resumes, interviewing skills and job searches.

Within less than 2 week, I worked with a co-worker to create a functional 36-page website with a calendar registration area for clients. This DIY project enabled job seekers to register online for virtual workshops. The process also sent them emails and text message reminders of the dates/times of the workshops.

The process collected information that is needed to provide assistance and guide them to other SC Works services as well as to case managers, workforce community partners and programs that could assist them during the pandemic. It tranformed the way services were offered and is still successfully in use today.
